The Pandemic has changed everything
Since opening its doors in 2003, the Native American Community Clinic (NACC) has always stayed true to its mission of promoting health and wellness of mind, body, and spirit of Native American families. Over the past year, we have seen the needs of the Native community increase for many reasons including the COVID-19 pandemic. NACC quickly responded by creating telehealth systems, expanding outreach and facilitating free COVID-19 testing and vaccinations, but we know there is a lot more work to do.
Our Emerging Needs
We have a health equity problem in Minnesota. The data is undeniable and it is bleak.
Native children are far more likely to die during childbirth than their white counterparts. Rates of diabetes, obesity and asthma are all significantly higher in the Native population than in any other racial or ethnic group. Life expectancies are lower for Native people in this state than for any other racial or ethnic group. Native adults in Minnesota are more likely to die of overdose (five times), liver disease (three times) and suicide (four times) than their whites counterparts.
These disparities are the result of generational trauma and lack of access to opportunity, education and healthcare. Consequences of decades of failed policies aimed at "solving the Indian problem" and assimilating Indigenous people and eliminating our culture.
The Time To Act Is Now.
We all recognize that these disparities are unacceptable and resources will be required to improve the health, wellness and quality of life for Indigenous families in Minnesota.
NACC’s philosophy is based on the simple premise of being a good relative-- our approach to providing care is rooted in love for our community, respect for our patients and the principles of harm reduction. The data is clear that this model works and we are moving the needle on a wide range of metrics. It is time for us to bring our small-but-mighty clinic to scale and offer a new affordable option for our community with our housing partners. NACC is determined to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the health of our community with our new clinic expansion and housing complex.

Increased HIV and MAT programs

Integrated pediatric care clinic for medical, dental and mental health services
Housing support and wrap-around services for individuals and families
NACC is committed to helping Native American families access equitable high quality care and this is more critical than ever. An uncertain economy means individuals are not having their important healthcare needs met. NACC’s Capital Campaign, named appropriately “We Look in All Directions”, will allow us to develop our clinic to operate at full capacity, provide housing solutions to our community and vital services to Twin Cities Native American community members and beyond. We are reimagining our health campus beyond integrated health services with mission critical partners and housing providers. We’re also expanding our mind, body and spiritual healing offerings, gardens, and more culturally specific health and wellbeing spaces and services.
The Goal

NACC has already secured $7.4 million toward its Comprehensive Campaign goal.

We’re are connecting with our corporate healthcare, philanthropic, public and private funding partners to ensure the success of our community development and expansion plan.

Over the past year, NACC has tripled gifts from individuals who understand the importance of supporting BIPOC lead organizations who are and have been meeting the needs of their community - listening, responding and reimagining the ways in which we all serve one another in times of crisis and times of resilience.
