MEDICAL PROVIDERS
Dr. Banaszak is an enrolled member of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe. She attended the University of Minnesota, Duluth and then received her MD degree from the University of Minnesota. She completed her residency in Family Practice at the Santa Monica Medical Center in California.
From 1989-94 Dr. Banaszak served with the Indian Health Service at Wind River, Wyoming and then practiced with the Allina Medical Clinic in Plymouth. She moved to the Indian Health Board in 1999 before leaving in 2002 to become one of the founders of the Native American Community Clinic.
She is a member of the Association of American Indian Physicians and the Metropolitan Urban Indian Directors Group. In addition she serves on the Boards of the Minneapolis American Indian Center, the American Indian Housing Development Corporation, and the American Indian Family Center.
Dr. Banaszak practices Family Practice and sees both children and adults. She also provides prenatal care.
Ms. Bickel is a new nurse practitioner on the NACC medical provider team. Originally from Waukesha, WI, Katie went to college around the corner from us at Augsburg College and studied International Relations. While studying in Latin America, she was struck by the healthcare needs there and decided to go into medicine.
Ms. Bickel did her graduate work at Yale University in Connecticut where she received her degree as a Nurse Practitioner. Katie's first medical position was on the Navajo Reservation where she served as a Nurse Practitioner for two years. She is happy to be back 'home' in South Minneapolis and thrilled to be joining the NACC team!
Lydia Caros, DO
Dr. Caros attended Wilmington College and then received her medical degree from the Des Moines University. Following an internship at Iowa Methodist Medical Center she completed residency training in Pediatrics at the Mayo Clinic. She is board certified in Pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Board of Pediatrics.
From 1983 to 2002 Dr. Caros practiced pediatrics at the Indian Health Board where she was also the medical director. She developed a program for lead screening of neighborhood children and worked with the City of Minneapolis on lead prevention education and lead safe housing.
Later Dr. Caros began to focus on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. She received specialized training in this condition at the University of Washington and has since designed a clinical system for detailed screening prenatal alcohol alcohol use screening and support for high risk women. In conjunction with Drs. Chang and Boys at the University of Minnesota Dr. Caros has diagnosed more than 1000 children.
In 2002 Dr. Caros helped found the Native American Community Clinic where she now both practices pediatrics and serves as executive director.
Susan Hibbs received her nursing degree from St. Olaf in 1982. She has her masters degree in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania where she became certified as both a pediatric and family practice nurse practitioner. She is a clinical preceptor/adjunct faculty member of the University of MN School of Nursing.
She has served the Native American community in the Phillips neighborhood since 1985, first at the Indian Health Board and since 2003 at NACC.
Susan is a certified diabetes educator. She teaches diabetes care at the diabetes breakfasts and dinners and is a key member of the Full Circle Diabetes Program team. She has a particular interest in teen and child care. Other interests include working with Habitat for Humanity building homes in the Minneapolis area for the last several years.
Rebekah is a family nurse practitioner who started working with NACC in July of 2009. She worked as a student at NACC for a year in 2005-06 when she was studying at the University of MN. After graduating with her Nurse Practitioner degree, she worked at the MCRC Runaway Intervention program in St. Paul with troubled teens. She also worked at the Robbinsdale Annex Teen Clinic. Rebekah sees all patients, but has a special interest in working with teens and with women's reproductive health issues.
Rebekah works at NACC two days per week and spends the rest of her time raising three small children. She is also involved in various community volunteer activities.
Dr. Rabie is a Family Practice physician and NACC's new Medical Director. She graduated from the University of MN Medical School in 1998, and completed her residency at the HCMC Family Practice program. She spent her first 18 years growing up at a deep rural hospital in South Africa where her father worked as a doctor. The last 18 years she has lived in South Minneapolis, where she pursued her own medical career.
From the time she decided to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Rabie knew that she wanted to work in a community clinic. She was the Medical Director at Southside Community Health Services for 9 years. Dr. Rabie enjoys the full spectrum of Family Medicine. She feels rewarded in providing healthcare to families, working with women through their pregnancies, caring for children as they grow, and helping people to make healthy choices as they move through their lives. At home Dr. Rabie enjoys her two young children, and her extended family.
COUNSELING PROVIDERS
Dr. Fields is originally from Kentucky and grew up in Indiana. She is married (since 1972) and has 1 son, Jason. Jason is married and has a young daughter. Just being called "Nana" makes her smile. Dr. Fields' Bachelor's and Master's degrees are from Indiana University. Her doctorate in psychology is from Northern Arizona University and she has a post doctorate in neuropsychology from Northern Arizona Neuropsychology.
She has worked with American Indian communities as a teacher and a therapist for over 25 years. She lived on the Navajo Reservation for 5 years where she was a kindergarten teacher and a school counselor. In addition to her work on the reservation, she also worked with urban American Indians in Flagstaff, Arizona and Minneapolis. For the past 3 years, she has volunteered on the Red Lake Reservation. In addition to providing therapy, she also teaches graduate courses in psychology at Argosy University. She has taught in BIA schools (ESL kindergarten, public schools (kindergarten, junior high) and in an Indiana state prison (high school special education reading, science and math).
Dr. Fields has extensive experience working with children, teenagers, and adults. Some of her specialty areas include:
- Testing for ADHD, learning disabilities, psychological disorders
- Therapy for anxiety, depression, PTSD
- Therapy for chronic health issues such as diabetes, weight loss management, and pain management
- Weight loss surgery evaluations and follow-up therapy.
Her approach to therapy is based on the needs of each individual. After meeting with her client during intake, she will discuss what options she thinks might be appropriate and the client can choose from those options or suggest others that have perhaps been helpful in the past.
Ms. Myhra, MS, LMFT is a member of the Red Lake Ojibwe Nation. She is currently a Doctoral Candidate in the University of Minnesota's Family Social Science Program, specializing in Marriage and Family Therapy. She received her Bachelor's of Science (BS) degree in Psychology from North Central University and my Master's of Science (MS) degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from East Carolina University.
Ms. Myhra works with individuals of all ages, and does couples and family therapy as well. She specializes in working with Adults with Serious and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI), treatment of co-occurring Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Abuse/Dependency, and child & adolescent psychiatric disorders.
She provides support and advocacy in a non-judgmental and healing manner. She believes that individuals and families (co)create their own meaning of "normal" functioning and works with them from within their own life world. She helps individuals and families identify and overcome barriers to achieving inner peace and their present goals.
