Chemical Health Counselor

EMPLOYER: Native American Community Clinic (NACC) DEPARTMENT: Medication Assisted Treatment REPORTS TO: MAT Treatment Director

SUMMARY: The Native American Community Clinic (NACC) and Red Lake Nation are opening a culturally-specific and trauma-informed Medication Assisted Treatment Center. The Chemical Dependency Counselor will provide direct care to clients. This position reports to the Treatment Director. Full-time position with competitive salary and benefits.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  This role will be part of a multi-disciplinary team which includes Physician, Intake Worker, Outreach Worker, Peer Recovery Specialists, Licensed Behavioral Health Professional, and Elder in Residence that together provide individual and group services to Native American (NA) persons with substance use disorder.

  • This position is responsible for ensuring the delivery of engaging, culturally-sensitive services to clients and their families, and for managing and communicating the details about client funding. This includes connection to resources, healthcare, and care coordination.

  • Provides treatment in a manner that reflects knowledge of Native American community values, beliefs, and history, and utilizes treatment interventions and methods that have been deemed appropriate through practice or research with NAs. Demonstrates this knowledge through documentation of interventions and methods in the electronic health record (in a timely manner). Understand and abide by confidentiality rules and regulations.

  • Provides culturally competent treatment through an awareness of one’s own personal biases and how they impact interactions with clients and staff, and provide leadership and clinical supervision for staff in this process. Participate in and ensures staff receive training and ongoing professional development.

  • Interacts with patients, staff and visitors to the Medication Assisted Treatment Program in a manner that demonstrates respect and understanding of cultural norms.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minnesota LADC or UMICAD

  • Previous experience working with Native Americans or other marginalized communities.

  • Knowledgeable about local resources.

  • Works well independently and on a team.

  • Excellent communication, customer service, and case management skills.

  • General computer proficiency, including MS Office and electronic health records.

  • MN DHS background clearance.

  • Attest to two (2) years free of chemical use problems.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

COMPUTER SKILLS:

To perform this job successfully an individual must have intermediate to advanced knowledge of: Spreadsheet Software (Excel); Word Processing Software (Word); Electronic Mail Software (Outlook); Presentation Software (PowerPoint); and Publisher Software as well as capability to use Electronic Record software.

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Work Experience in a non-for-profit and healthcare.

  • Ability to work in a diverse culture.

  • Experience working within the local Native American community.
